Laura Franz
UMass Dartmouth, CVPA
Professor of Art + Design
Providence, RI
I am a teacher. I primarily teach GD History and co-teach Intro to Art History with an art historian. I also teach Typography and Digital Essentials (the first year PhotoShop/Illustrator class that is about soooo much more than PhotoShop/Illustrator).
As a teacher, I'm currently working on promoting student agency -- encouraging students to question the canon, explore the rules, find their voice, and figure out where they might fit in the art/design world. I also try to inspire students to embrace research: exploration, experimentation, collection, analysis.
Here is my official research blurb:
Inspired by the intersection of tradition and technology, Laura's research interests include how we can use theory from established media to inform our understanding of new media and contemporary messages. She writes, presents, and makes art related to typography, how and why people read, and art/design history.
